What is Rosehip Tea?

Rosehip tea is a delicious herbal tea that is made by brewing the fruits of the rose plant. It has a mild, fruity and slightly sweet taste.

Rosehips begin to grow at the start of summer and are typically harvested just after the first frost of the year, when rosehips will ripen and be ready to pick.

History of Rosehip:

Rosehip fruits have been used in traditional herbal medicine for thousands of years, with the ancient Chinese, Persians, Romans and Greeks all recognising the potential health benefits of rosehips.

In Britain during the Second World War, with a scarcity of imported citrus fruit, people were encouraged to rediscover the art of foraging and collect the wild rosehips which were plentiful in the countryside. The Department of Health organised collection dates where people would hand over their foraged rosehips to be converted into a nutritious syrup. Due to the high Vitamin C content of rosehips, the campaign was designed to combat vitamin deficiency ailments such as scurvy.

Nutritional Information of Rosehip Tea:

Rosehip fruits are incredibly rich in Vitamin C, containing roughly 1500mg per 100 grams. This is roughly 30 times more Vitamin C than in the equivalent weight of oranges!

Rosehips are also a rich source of Vitamins A, E, B1, B2, as well as minerals such as iron, magnesium, phosphorus, sulfur, and antioxidants (flavonoids).

As rosehip fruits are such a rich source of vitamins and minerals, rosehip tea has been linked to multiple potential health benefits.

Top 5 Potential Rosehip Tea Health Benefits:

1. Boosting Immune System

Rosehip fruits are an abundant source of vitamins C and A, which support healthy functioning of the immune system. Rosehip tea is also a source of antioxidants such as polyphenols and carotenoids, which help protect against cell damage from free radicals and strengthen the body’s natural defences.

2. Supporting Good Heart Health

The strong anti-inflammatory properties of rosehip tea have been linked to health benefits to the cardiovascular system. Rosehips contain high levels of the antioxidant flavanoids which, according to Healthline, have been shown to reduce blood pressure in people with elevated levels and improve blood flow to the heart.

3. Helping to Treat Arthritis

The anti-inflammatory properties of rosehip tea may help those suffering from arthritis by reducing joint pain. The Arthritis Foundation states that rosehips reduce inflammation by preventing the production of inflammatory proteins. Therefore rosehip tea may help to decrease the pain associated with arthritis thanks to the reduction in inflammation. The Arthritis Foundation states that one scientific study found that rosehip intake decreased joint pain by about one third in arthritis patients.

4. Promoting Healthy Skin

Vitamins in rosehip tea may benefit skin health. Rosehip tea is rich in vitamin C which has been shown to promote collagen production, which is a key component in keeping skin looking hydrated and youthful. Rosehip tea is also a source of vitamin A, which may protect skin cells against sun damage, helping to combat skin aging.

5. Aiding Weight Loss

Rosehip tea may help to aid weight loss. Rosehips are high in an antioxidant called tiliroside which, according to Healthline, may have fat-burning properties. More scientific study is needed, but an initial study showed that participants who took rosehip extract experienced significantly decreased body weight and stomach fat when compared with the placebo group.

How to Prepare Rosehip Tea:

Loose Leaf: To brew rosehip tea from rosehip fruits, add one teaspoon of fruits per 200ml of boiling water and allow to brew for 10-15 minutes. We recommend using a teapot infuser and, after allowing to brew for 10 minutes, giving the fruits a gentle squeeze with a spoon to help unlock the flavour and colour of the rosehips.

Tea Bags: To support easy brewing, and to enable you to enjoy the benefits of rosehip tea on the go, we have made our rosehip tea available in our biodegradable tea bags! Simply add boiling water to a tea bag and allow to brew for around 5 minutes.
